Hints for Calming the First Day Jitter's
Hint #1: One of the most important things that you need to do to make the first day of school an easier transition is make sure that your child goes to bed at reasonable time. It will be much harder for you to leave an over tired child because all it causes is more stress and more tears. Getting a good amount of sleep is highly important through out the year as well.
Hint #2: Be prepared to fill out paperwork. If your school gives you the papers to fill out before hand that is great. However, a lot of times there is papers to fill out on the first day of school. Allow yourself enough time to come to the classroom (if it is allowed) and fill out what ever needs to be filled out. Do not just drop off your child before finding out if there is some type of paperwork. This is also the time when teachers collect lunch money and find out how your child will get home in the afternoons.
Hint #3: Don't linger. Once you've filled out everything that needs to be filled out try not to hang around. Leaving your child on the first day of school can or will be traumatizing for your child and for yourself. Give your child and huge hug and kiss and leave as quickly as you can. Yes, there will be tears and sometimes lots of them. As Kindergarten teachers we are prepared for the crying. We will hug and nuture your child so he or she can stop crying. This can a real bonding time for your child and teacher. By having this contact with your child, he or she learns to trust us. By slipping out as quickly as possible you can avoid a more traumatic scene.
